It’s helpful to look at customer leads like a scratch-off lottery ticket. We can’t tell what we have until we scratch it off to see if we’ve won. And how long do we wait to scratch off a ticket to see what we’ve won? Right. Leads need to be treated the same way.

Sadly, 71% of all leads are never followed up on. Leads that are followed up on are touched only 1.3 times. And the average response time is 46 hours 53 minutes. Just think about all the opportunities being left on the table.

The Progression of a Sale

It usually takes four contacts before low-hanging fruit is harvested and seven contacts to finish off the sale. Studies indicate that salespeople who follow up six times have a 70% likelihood of ending up with a sale.

The message here is simple: you wouldn’t scratch off your lottery ticket, then toss it in the trash if there was no winner that day. You’d hold onto the ticket until all possibility of winning was exhausted. And if profitability is a driver for you, then this is how lead contacts should be approached as well.
